About Matt Batt

I studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and graduated with a degree in fine art.

Working from memory and direct observation, I draw on the interior life of everyday scenes that capture my attention.  Animals act as a foil to the people that populate my paintings.  I have made a body of work of figures and interiors and a series of portraits.

I am influenced by many artists but also find pleasure in children’s drawings, people’s doodles and fourteenth century Indian miniatures.

My work has been selected for the National Portrait Gallery BP Portrait Award several times.  One example, Portrait Of My Sister was selected for the 2009 BP Portrait Award and can be seen on the NPG website

I have an entry in David Buckman’s Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945, 2006, vol. 1, pg 102

I hold solo exhibitions at Oliver Contemporary (www.olivercontemporary.co.uk) and my work features regularly in their seasonal group shows
